5/22/2023 0 Comments The three body problem book![]() ![]() The Three-Body Problem is a thoroughly inventive piece of literature, crossing genre boundaries to craft a strong thesis about human societies and their life cycles. I went in plot-blind but very hopeful, and it did not disappoint. On my ongoing quest to consume Hugo-winning novels and expand my reading outside the United States, The Three-Body Problem presented a great opportunity. The Three-Body Problem is a masterclass in sci-fi with a thesis, telling a complex story about the perseverance of intelligent life and the psychology of cultures in crisis. At the same time, it spins an allegorical tale about an endangered alien species and the cult on Earth that will help it to take over our planet. It explores the real-life impacts of China’s Cultural Revolution on its scientific and intellectual life from the 1960s to the present day. ![]() Spanning decades and multiple narrators, The Three-Body Problem melds historical fiction and futuristic fantasy. Ken Liu’s 2014 English translation won a Hugo award, becoming the first novel from Asia to do so. Originally published in China in 2008, the book received critical and audience acclaim. Others, like Cixin Liu’s The Three-Body Problem, stick closer to home. ![]() ![]() Some science fiction novels tackle the fully fantastic: strange technologies, daring expeditions, and alternate realities. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments I shock myself by beatrice wood![]() Rebellious, radical, and romantic, Wood (1893-1998) defied propriety to become a true national, and international, treasure. With candor and insight, she recollects nearly ten decades of world shaking events, heart breaking romances, and artistic achievement. In her own charming, spirited, and readable style, Beatrice Wood tells us the story of her unorthodox life and her influence on 20th-century art. Now one of Americas acclaimed ceramicists, Beatrice Wood shares the intriguing details of her unconventional life in I Shock Myself. Her promising youth was followed by a disastrous marriage, financial woes and a debilitating physical affliction but in 1933, at the age of forty, she discovered the passion that would change her life: pottery. She fled to Paris for several bohemian seasons as a painter and actress, then returned to New York where she fell into the loving clutches of two Frenchmen: Henri-Pierre Roche, the author of Jules and Jim, and Marcel Duchamp, the iconoclastic Dadaist. Rebellious, radical and romantic, Beatrice Wood was determined to be an artist. I dont recall where I got the nudge to purchase Beatrice Woods autobiography, I Shock Myself, but once starting to read the book, I feel unfortunate I. ![]() Beatrice Woods Life has been extraordinary in every way, from earliest childhood, when her dominating Victorian mother realized she wasnt like the rest of them, to her productive life at ninety-five in Californias Ojiai Valley. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() She also shocked her peers with her unconventional relationships and had one child out of wedlock before she gave birth to Mary Shelley. By her mid-thirties she had debated with famous writers like Thomas Paine, published her own groundbreaking work advocating for women’s rights, and lived in Paris at the height of the Reign of Terror. Devoted to breaking free of the constraints that bound women of her time, Wollstonecraft was a passionate and unorthodox woman who carved her own path in life using her fierce intellect and gift for words. Love and Fury by Samantha Silva examines the life of Mary Wollstonecraft, a groundbreaking feminist and mother of Frankenstein author Mary Shelley. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments If i never met you book summary![]() ![]() Laurie soon finds that both her social and work life are affected by her new single status. Laurie has barely had time to process Dan’s departure when, within weeks of their break up, he announces that heġ) has a new girlfriend (who happens to work at a rival firm)Ģ) is a father-to-be as said girlfriend is now pregnant. Worst still, Dan works at the same firm as Laurie so she is forced to keep up a happy front at work. ![]() Having spent half of her life with Dan, and not knowing why he no longer wants to be with her, Laurie is hurt and confused. Her world collapses when her partner of eighteen years leaves her. Our protagonist, and narrator, is Laurie, a thirty-six year old lawyer. Blending humour and realism McFarlane’s story is as witty as it is topical. Once again McFarlane writing combines laugh-out-loud moments with an insightful narrative that taps into deep-seated issues. “This Greek God was prepared to anoint her his Phony Goddess? It did feel like the most longed-for boy in school asking you to prom.” McFarlane just keeps getting better and better, and this time round she gives a new spin to the tired ‘fake-dating’ trope (which prior to this book I considered to be one of my least favourite romcom tropes). ![]() If I Never Met You is the fourth novel I’ve read by Mhairi McFarlane and I’m happy to say that it is my favourite book of hers. “The trouble with liars, Laurie had decided from much research in the professional field, is they always thought everyone else was less smart than them.” ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments These truths jill![]() I particularly like her account of Frederick Douglass. These Truths often features vignettes, many of which are nicely done. To describe republican politics, she pulls a Fisher Ames quote from Emerson: “a republic is like a raft, which would never sink, but then your feet are always in the water.” Sometimes Lepore’s literary background serves her well. She does sometimes note misdeeds by Democrats such as Woodrow Wilson’s racist policies, and she laments Clinton’s character defects. She recognizes, for example, that Alger Hiss was, in fact a spy, although she does try to downplay his importance, and that the Tea Party protesters were not racist, nor were they simply paid Astroturfers. Lepore is not as biased as are many others on the Left. Unfortunately, she does not seem to be capable of understanding the arguments across the aisle, preferring instead the Progressive conceit according to which one side represents reason and the other, well, something else. ![]() Presumably, Lepore’s hope was to help us bridge our divisions. ![]() In These Truths, Jill Lepore laments that while “the United States is founded on a set of ideas,” nonetheless “Americans have become so divided that they no longer agree, if they ever did, about what those ideas are, or were.” She undertakes to write “an American history from beginning to end across that divide.” ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments The tiger john vaillant review![]() This ancient, tenuous relationship between man and predator is at the very heart of this remarkable book. And we come to know their descendants, who, crushed by poverty, have turned to poaching and further upset the natural balance of the region. We witness the arrival of Russian settlers in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, soldiers and hunters who greatly diminished the tiger populations. We meet the native tribes who for centuries have worshiped and lived alongside tigers, even sharing their kills with them. Injured, starving, and extremely dangerous, the tiger must be found before it strikes again.Īs he re-creates these extraordinary events, John Vaillant gives us an unforgettable portrait of this spectacularly beautiful and mysterious region. As the trackers sift through the gruesome remains of the victims, they discover that these attacks aren't random: the tiger is apparently engaged in a vendetta. ![]() ![]() The tiger isn't just killing people, it's annihilating them, and a team of men and their dogs must hunt it on foot through the forest in the brutal cold. It's December 1997, and a man-eating tiger is on the prowl outside a remote village in Russia's Far East. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments To Tame a Sheikh by Olivia Gates![]() ![]()

Upon returning home, I jumped back into the story and finished it over dinner. I dove in eagerly and didn’t want to leave my computer when I had to go out to a doctor’s appointment. I decided to power through Let the Sky Fall because of it’s beautiful cover (man, it actually perfectly works for the story it’s not a generically pretty cover) and because I’d seen and heard of it before, though I didn’t really know much about the plot.
